synopsis.

Through simple prose and vivid illustrations, this heartwarming book encourages positive behaviour as children see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. Bucket filling and dipping are effective metaphors for understanding the effects of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves.

my thoughts.

Have You Filled a Bucket Today? is a beautiful book about feelings for children. It encourages children, from a young age, to think about the positive and negative emotions we all feel and how that affects us and others on a daily basis using the image of an ‘imaginary’ bucket that we can either fill up, or dip into.

I read this book for the first time with my class of 22 five and six year olds during Wellbeing Week, because we have a huge focus on student wellbeing. This text and illustrations (which are beautiful) are simple enough for young learners who do need a very simple, visual reminder about the effects of kindness.

The beauty of this book is that it allows for a physical manifestation of understanding of the themes in this book: it’s easy to create your own ‘bucket’ (we made ours using plastic cups) and practise the idea of bucket-filling daily, by writing positive notes to yourself or to others.

This is a wonderfully positive book and a great reminder to all of us to look for the good in ourselves and others every day. I gave Have You Filled a Bucket Today? 5 out of 5 stars.
