synopsis.

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn's sister Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

my thoughts.

The second book in the Penryn and the End of Days trilogy, World After picks up right where the first book left off as Penryn begins to process the events of Angelfall.

This series is very family oriented - Penryn is devoted to her family (her mother and her sister) and spends a lot of this book trying to keep the both of them safe. All her decisions are made around the impact that they might have on her family, even second-guessing herself. Penryn is not a perfect character - she has her flaws - but her determination to fix the problems she can is wonderful to read about.

I was disappointed Raffe wasn’t in this book as much as the first; I loved his dynamic with Penryn in Angelfall and it did feel like it was lacking that in this particular book. That said, there was a host of angel, demon and monster action to keep me entertained as we moved from one action sequence to the next fairly rapidly.

As in the first book, this one is gritty and gruesome, and Susan Ee does not shy away from that, for which I am grateful. A story about the apocalypse doesn’t need to hide the horror that comes with such an event, and I felt this was done extremely well. The demons and the monsters in this book are terrifying (and even more so when their history is revealed), but the scariest group of all are the angels and I find that so fascinating to read.

I can’t wait to read the final book, End of Days. I gave World After 4.5 out of 5 stars.

  1. Not bad, not bad - 4.5, good! This is the very next series I am going to tackle. It won't be for another month or so, but I plan to do a read through all three back to back and I'm excited to get to it!
