synopsis.

If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?
The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

my thoughts.

Glass Sword was an interesting read. It built upon the world started in Red Queen and then turned everything on it’s head.

The biggest break-away for me were the change in the characters, particularly those from the first book. Mare, who is our heroine, has been through so much that in this second book we’re left watching her try to find out who she is in the wake of everything. She’s still tough, fierce and determined, but she has to decide what kind of person she needs to become if she goes searching for other Red Bloods with abilities.

Cal and Maven are both back, as well as Kilorn and Farley. We get to know Mare’s brother, Shade, as well as the rest of her family. At times I found the stories of the side characters to be far more interesting than Mare’s own journey, especially once we start meeting the other Red Bloods with abilities. There is also something very compelling at Maven’s story (which I can’t go into too much detail about with spoilers).

Ultimately, I enjoyed exploring the world of Norta in more depth. There were definite moments of action that I just absolutely loved, and there are times when I wished the story would move on a bit quicker. Victoria Aveyard left us with another jaw-dropping cliff-hanger that will ensure I read the next book.

I rated Glass Sword 3.5 out of 5 stars.
