synopsis.

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

my thoughts.

I love reading books about angels (and demons) but I’m always a little hesitant about picking up a book because I always have high expectations for them and I’m worried that I’ll be disappointed. That was not the case at all with Angelfall.

We begin in the aftermath of the initial attack in which angels have descended to Earth and have set-about destroying the world and killing humans. We meet Penryn, her mother and her younger sister, Paige, as they’re about to try and leave their home to find somewhere safe, away from their nearly deserted town. Her sister is taken by angels and she is left with a wingless, unconscious angel.

Penryn is one of my favourite female characters I’ve read all year. She’s tough, no-nonsense and resolute in her goal of saving her sister, even if it means working with an enemy she doesn’t understand. Her life hasn’t been easy, but she’s adapted and she’s kick-ass. Raffe is an interesting character; he’s an angel, which sets him apart from human, but he finds himself in a strange place without his greatest asset. I loved the banter between these two characters and the unlikely bond forged between them despite being enemies. Penryn’s mother is also a chilling character to read, at times earning sympathy from the reader and at others, incredulity.

This is a fast paced book. I read it in a single sitting in a few hours and honestly didn’t want to put it down until I reached the end. As the first book in the series, some questions are answered and others are set-up for the follow-up books which I will most definitely be reading.

I rated Angelfall 4 out of 5 stars. If you look books about angels, definitely check this one out!
